Slovenian referee Slavko Vinchich was overcome with emotion after being appointed to officiate the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, and broke down in tears.
The match is scheduled to take place on July 19 in New Jersey, USA.
Vinchich learned of his appointment as the final's lead referee at a special meeting organized by the FIFA Referees Department, led by Pierluigi Collina.
After receiving the news, the Slovenian referee was visibly emotional and tearful.
The 46-year-old Vinchich has previously officiated the 2024 European Championship semifinal and the Champions League final.
Interestingly, the last time Argentina was defeated in the World Cup was in 2022, when they lost to Saudi Arabia 1-2 in the group stage, a match that was also refereed by Slavko Vinchich.
