New Goal Record Set at the World Cup

The 2026 World Cup has been notable not only for its new format featuring 48 national teams, but also for a number of historic records set during the tournament.

Hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the tournament has seen new records set for the number of goals scored, as well as individual achievements by players and coaches. While some of these records were expected due to the increased number of matches, others have been a surprise.

The most significant statistical outcome of the tournament has been the record-breaking productivity. In 104 matches, teams scored a total of 308 goals, the highest figure in World Cup history.

The previous record was set at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where 172 goals were scored in 64 matches.

However, it's difficult to compare tournaments directly, as this is the first time the World Cup has been held with 48 national teams, rather than the traditional 32, resulting in an increase in matches from 64 to 104.
