England Edge Past Congo DR in Thrilling Encounter
England secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Congo DR, thanks to a brace from Harry Kane, in their World Cup 2026 match.

Following the match between England and Congo DR, the most obvious conclusion to draw is to compare this contest with the Congolese team's performance against Uzbekistan. What we've witnessed suggests that Uzbekistan did not just face a poor African team that runs a lot, but rather a confident, organized, and well-structured side that presented a genuine challenge.
The match, held in Atlanta on Wednesday, was expected to be a cautious and positional football display with neither team taking undue risks, but the reality was different. French coach Sebastien Desabre has instilled in the Congolese team a sense of unity, balance, and the ability to capitalize on limited opportunities (something we've unfortunately experienced firsthand).
The game started slowly, with England dominating possession and focusing on increasing their pass completion statistics. However, it wasn't long before the Congo DR players took center stage.
Brayen Sipenga, who had troubled the Uzbekistan players in the previous match, scored a beautiful goal after a lovely combination initiated by Shansel Mbemba on the left flank. The English players were shocked, and none of them believed that goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could have prevented the goal, which gave Congo DR a 0-1 lead.
After conceding the goal, Thomas Tuchel's team periodically threatened the Congolese goal, with goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau producing two incredible saves in the first half that could be used as footage for commercials: the French club's reserve goalkeeper managed to deflect two shots from Jude Bellingham and one from Harry Kane.
In the middle of the second half, after a pass from newly introduced Anthony Gordon, Kane headed the ball into the corner of the goal. Mpasi managed to get a hand to it but couldn't hold on, leveling the score at 1-1.
The Congolese team was on the verge of reaching the 1/8 finals for nearly 75 minutes, but Kane proved he's one of the world's top strikers. The English forward found himself surrounded by several opponents, received the ball, and found a favorable position to strike with force, placing the ball under the crossbar for a 2-1 lead.
