American freeskier Eileen Gu has expressed sympathy for Hunter Hess, who faced a scathing attack from Donald Trump after commenting on immigration policy.

Gu, along with American Olympic champion Chloe Kim, spoke out in support of Hess, who was labeled a 'total loser' by Trump.

Hess sparked Trump's ire when asked about immigration policy, responding: 'Just because I'm wearing the flag, it doesn't mean I agree with everything that's happening in the US.'

Gu described the situation as a 'losing press battle' and expressed disappointment that the controversy was overshadowing the Olympics.

'The whole point of sports is to bring people together. The human body, the human spirit, the spirit of competition, the ability to break records - all of these things exist in sports.'
