Maldives football scandal: Green Streets club under fire for cancelling match

A scandal has erupted in the Maldives' Dhiraagu Dhivehi Premier League. Green Streets club did not play their final match against New Radiant club. If Green Streets had lost by four or more goals, they would have been relegated. However, according to Football Association rules, a club that cancels a match is deemed to have lost 2-0.

Green Streets' relegation was instead confirmed for Club Valencia. Club Valencia's management immediately released a statement, accusing Green Streets of manipulating the match result. Club Valencia described it as match-fixing and expressed their dissatisfaction with the Football Association's decision.

The Football Association imposed sanctions on Green Streets: the club was fined 50,000 Maldivian rufiyaa (£2,380) and banned from transfers. The club's management did not consider this a fair decision and announced their intention to appeal.

Green Streets club, on the other hand, claimed they were forced to cancel the match due to several players falling ill with diarrhea and flu. The club's management described the accusations of match-fixing as unfounded and emphasized their innocence.
